“…when we let that fear debilitate us, break us down, kill us then all we have is our fear and nothing else. “

March 31, 2008 at 2:05 pm (Uncategorized)

This is by far one of the best postings I have read in a long, long time.  I’m not just saying this because this blogger is one of my good friends. I love him,  I do. But right now Joey Bahamas is going through something hard-and I’m glad that rather than conceal it, he’s sharing it with us. This quote is by far one of my favorite all time quotes, and I know I will use it in the future…giving him credit of course:

“There is so much out there waiting for us. I am scared, so scared. But, I’m not the only one. And, being scared isn’t the issue…fear is healthy, normal, human. But, when we let that fear debilitate us, break us down, kill us then all we have is our fear and nothing else. If you find that person, that thing, that hope that makes you happy hold on to it, fight for it, and don’t let it go. Please. Because goal in life should be to insure our own happiness and the happiness of those around us, without hurting those around us.”

Transgender Sex Worker Murdered: The Story That Went Underreported

March 23, 2008 at 4:01 pm (Uncategorized)

I was shocked when I heard of this news story. This occurred early February and I didn’t know about it until I was forwarded the link by a classmate this week. I’m mostly shocked at the failed reporting by the journalists who wrote the story. The use of the terminology, their insensitivity, and their non-empathic state just further builds on the fact that news organizations need to hold sensitivity trainings to build a more progressive news department.

Below is the email to the reporting journalists as well as the article that appeared in the New York Daily News:

Cops: Ex-con slays Bronx transsexual ‘hooker’

BY ELIZABETH HAYS { ehays@nydailynews.com } and JONATHAN LEMIRE { jlemire@nydailynews.com }

A transgendered prostitute was stabbed to death in the Bronx Saturday by a customer who was apparently surprised by the hooker’s true sex, police sources said Saturday.

The victim - a 25-year-old man who dressed like a woman - was identified by sources as Talib Stewart, who often went by the feminine nicknames of Nesha or Sanesha.

Stewart was stabbed multiple times inside a Belmont apartment building about 6 a.m. Saturday, police said.

A 37-year-old man was later arrested inside the second-floor apartment, police said.

Though the suspect’s identity was not immediately released, the sources said he was the prostitute’s john who became enraged when he learned his partner was not a woman.

Stewart, more than 6 feet tall, was known to wear stylish, provocative outfits with towering high heels, neighbors said.

Stewart also apparently had undergone surgery to give him larger breasts and other female characteristics, neighbors said.

“She looked like a girl but when she turned around, you knew it was a man,” a 17-year-old neighbor said. “She had a big jaw and an Adam’s apple.”

Neighbors said Stewart was a friendly and flirty presence on the block and was rarely hassled for his appearance.

“She’s always been Nesha to me,” said a friend who just gave her first name, Janelle. “She’s funny and outgoing.”

“It’s a shock - nobody should do something like that,” said another neighbor who asked not to be identified. “She never had any problems here.”

Stewart’s relatives visited the crime scene Saturday afternoon and angrily declined comment. Neighbors said they didn’t know if Stewart was turning tricks but they had noticed frequent male visitors to her home.

The suspect remained in police custody last night as the Bronx district attorney was determining which charges to file, officials said.

Bleu Magazine is Spectacular

March 15, 2008 at 11:03 pm (Uncategorized)

When I picked up my copy of Bleu Magazine today I immediately went down to my favorite pizza shop on Christopher Street to open it up and read it while I chow down on some pizza. And needless to say, I was not ready for what laid before me. Bleu magazine is spectacular. I was floored. The format. The style. The content. The thing I most enjoyed about Bleu magazine the most is that it made gay look more like an aspect of our character than an identity. It wasn’t depressing. It was fun filled, catchy, and juicy. The last time I felt like this about another publication was when I opened up Clik Magazine. The magazine is simply amazing and it captivates the very essence of our community.  I give it several standing ovations.

Bleu magazine reigns supreme. Get into it.

Bedford Stuyvesant is Dying

March 13, 2008 at 1:35 pm (Uncategorized)

I visited Bedstuy a few weekends ago. And its transformation became more apparent. Cops now occupied the streets to keep the gentrifiers safe. The graffiti on the gates of small businesses, the dirty pavement blackened with gum, the concrete gravel that had finger and foot imprints, that Bedstuy decor, was quickly fading away. My neighborhood was becoming beautiful. It was no longer Brooklyn Heights’ ugly sister. It had its own reputation now. And, apparently, a new name. Bedstuy: Do or Die, is now, Stuyvesant Heights: Pay the High Rent or Get the Fuck out. I don’t want a renaissance in my neighborhood. Let the monkey bars decay, lay low the rent of everyone’s favorite little coffee shop on dekalb, and leave the drug dealers be; they’re my mother and sisters only form of protection at night.

I remember old Bedstuy. When one second you’re in a neighborhood aligned with Brownstones, turn the corner and you figured you’re in the ghetto. Now every block looks like it went under some serious re constructive surgery.

My favorite part of Bedstuy was always Tompkins Park. The high-ass monkey bars, the baseball arena, the summer festivals that attracted all shades of Black and Latino, the playground that provided the perfect vacancy for tag and hide-and-go-seek. I remember the smell. The smell of sweat that my brothers and their friends exhausted on the court with strangers playing basketball. If you’re from Bedstuy you know what I’m talking about. Now, it smells like a Sarah Jessica Parker fragrance. And no matter how hard you play basketball and how much sweat you exhaust, that Sarah fragrance will eliminate the odor that made Tompkins park different. I can’t bitch and fuss about the smell anymore. And, in many ways, its upsetting.

The beauty of Bedstuy is dying under its now beautiful facade. But it’s ugliness is what made it so beautiful–

Bedstuy is dying.

How do you liberals say it-oh yes- the “kids” aren’t ready!

Is that it?

Noah’s Arc Update

March 4, 2008 at 3:08 pm (Uncategorized)

All actors are not attached to the project, the deals have not been closed with some of the actors involved.

There is no production date, though one is being looked at for this month.

There is no set release date because the film has not found a distribution partner.

There’s been speculation that Jensen Atwood won’t be returning, his deal too has not been finalized!

I do want to say this. I get my information straight from LOGO themselves.  And everytime I call to get an update, they give me a different story.

On Janurary they told me production will begin in Feburary.

A few months ago, they told me that all contracts have been signed.

Hmm?
