Why Genre Magazine & Instinct Magazine SUCK!
The never appropriate & ALWAYS bias Genre and Instinct have never published a face of color ontheir cover. They suck! Boycott their shiteous magazines. It gets worse, I only counted about 8 faces of color when I looked through the last issue of Instinct’s magazine. They think by picking Patrik Ian Polk and Derrick L Briggs as one of their top men that they will relieve them of not having men of color in their magazines. Well I have news for you two despicable magazines! You have terrible articles, disgusting features, and an even more horrible layout.
I was once assigned to write an article in Instinct magazine and decided against it after noticing how crazy racists the magazine was. At the LGBT expo I asked one of Genre staff member where are all the men of color in which he replied, “Ask the managing editor.” And I did the guy gave me his email and asked me to send him my articles. And never replied!
Genre dub themselves the National Publication for white gay men!
Losers.

child this is old news, but, you are still young. the white gay establisment has always done this. in the old days before computer dating/hookups, 90% of the time they would say, no fats, no fems and no blacks, and never saw anything worng with it. black gay men are as despised by the white gay men as much as straight ones. we can’t put them on the cover becuase our “readers” don’t want to see a black face other than in hiv med ads. any black person that buys that line and those lame magazines is a fool throwing his money away.
i hope your take on it gets young men of color up in arms and call out these so called “editors.”

Not sure about Genre, but there’s a black guy on the cover of the new (April) issue of Instinct. Beyonce was their cover a couple months ago. They’ve had black men (hotties, too!) on the cover before.

Um, yep, just got the new April Instinct and the cover guy is black. One of the guys who went on the blind date was also black. They had J.P. from Survivor on February’s cover, who is Latino, and Niecy Nash was the Soapbox. Oh, and Beyonce was on the cover a few months ago, too.

I used to be subscribed to Instinct, but once my subscription ended, I didn’t seek to renew it. I don’t know if I’d call it outright racist, if only because there are always gonna be token features for people of color, but the target demographic was definitely not me. They were writing for some middle class white homosexual man with a toned-muscle/tan fetish, or so they were when I was subscribed.
So now I’m subscribed to Clik, even though I’m not particularly satisfied with Clik either. The most recent issue was much better than the previous ones, but the editing is…questionable, to say the least. + for the content, though.
Anyway, I don’t think I’m much for magazines in general…so.

Ummmmm… so when was the last time you picked up a magazine targeting people of colour and counted the number of white people in there? Does anyone condemn people of colour for excluding others? I guess the general consensus is that racism is really white ppl hatin on blk folk. For my part I do not have a problem with magazines etc. that have only/predominantly white faces because i have no problem seeing faces that are exclusively of colour (e.g. Noah’s Arc?) Of course the ideal would be having random race/ethnicity ratios and readers/viewers who don’t count but we are miles away from that on every front.

Daryn, I wish you could have left you emal address so that I can reply to you. But I guess I can reply through here.
I picked up a magazine today that targeted people of color. How many white faces did I count? 0. Why? Because that’s exactly the purpose of the magazine to target people of color. Magazines like Genre Magazine and Instinct Magazine {with the exception of a few covers] have a hidden agenda, and that is to serve to white gay men. Why
Because that’s truly where all their moneys lie. If these mainstream magazines would include gay faces, and faces of color, than there will be no need to create magazines targeting social and sexual minorites.
And yes your opinions are false and thoroughly underdeveloped. Shows like Noah’s Arc was created as a way to bring fourth images of gay men of color. Since gay mainstream shows like Queer As Folk and Will and Grace have a lack of gay men of color, Noah’s Arc was brought on to bring images of gay men of color.
Thank you for commenting on my blog.

“…no need to create magazines targeting social and sexual minorites.” You say that like it’s a bad thing! lol I, as a sexual and social minority, would love to be able to pick up a magazine targeted specifically towards me so I don’t see why there should not be publications that target niche markets who are not ‘minorities’. Of course that’s where their money lies. EVERYTHING that is available for sale is targeted towards a specific group of people, it’s probably a major cornerstone of capitalism. lol What I don’t agree with is the notion that it is all a big conspiracy, a “hidden agenda” as you put it. I do not know these people personally, as i would assume you also do not, so I cannot say for certain that there really isn’t a hidden agenda but I am just prone to giving people the benefit of the doubt.
If it is a conspiracy then why are people of colour perpetuating it by creating things with a not-so-hidden agenda? They are creating black magazines instead of creating multi-cultural magazines. But like i said, I am for black magazines as well as white magazines, gay, str8, for women, for men etc. as much as i am for multi-cultural magazines. And what i hope for ultimately is not just for multi-cultural magazines to exist but for them to exist alongside the niche magazines and that no one, whether minority or not, would be offended by any type of publication and of course by extension that society as a whole would function this way. But as i said in my first comment, the world is far away from that. I think the “black magazines” are a good step towards that but I think crying “hidden agenda” is counterproductive.
I hope I managed to develop my point/opinion better this time. lol

I would like to agree with both sides of the argument, yes magazine have a hidden agenda, and yes their target is where their money is, meaning Genre is for the white male who is in his 20’s and likes to tan ALOT!!! But the point is we as black people do it as well, we have magazine that target black people, that’s where that magazine is going to make its money. The question is should we create a system like this? And can we change it so that we can have a magazine that has both sides of the gay world that we all live in, because remember as a special group of people we can all relate in some way and still be true to ourselves.
